Fire ants were first detected in Richlands, a suburb in Brisbane’s south-west, in February 2001. They were soon detected in neighbouring suburbs, including Oxley.
The suburb of Oxley has been inside the Fire Ant Biosecurity Zone for twenty years. Infestations in the suburb have been treated many times. Numerous large fire ant nests are still infesting Oxley and threatening public safety.
Time for a Royal Commission to hold Biosecurity Queensland to account for a failed National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program. The program wasted $600m of public money and fire ants continue to threaten public safety.
